Pawleys Island homeowners should call a roofer in the months before hurricane season starts in June, ideally in late winter or spring. That gives Honest Roofers time to do a free roof inspection, handle any repairs, and plan a full roof replacement if your roof will not safely make it through another storm season.

Get Ahead of Hurricane Season

A free inspection before June shows you what needs attention while there is still time to fix it calmly.

Why should I have my roof inspected before hurricane season?

An inspection before storm season finds small problems while they are still small. Hurricane season runs from June to November, and once a storm is in the forecast, it is too late to fix a loose shingle, a cracked pipe boot, or a worn spot along the edge. Wind finds those weak points first, and wind driven rain follows right behind.

Pawleys Island sits right on the coast, so homes here deal with salt air, steady sea breezes, humidity, and strong summer thunderstorms long before a named storm ever shows up. All of that wears on a roof year after year. A spring inspection gives you a clear picture of how your roof has held up and what it needs before the busiest part of the year.

There is another practical reason to call early. After a major storm, roofers across the Grand Strand get very busy, and every homeowner with damage is trying to get help at the same time. Taking care of your roof ahead of time means you are not waiting in that line with a leak over your head.

What does a pre-season roof inspection look for?

A good pre-season inspection checks every part of the roof that wind and rain can attack. When Honest Roofers inspects a roof, we take photos so you can see what we see, and we give you a written estimate for anything that needs work. Here is what we look at:

  • Shingles. Missing, cracked, curling, or loose shingles, and areas where the seal strips have let go.
  • Edges and drip edge. The roof edges are where wind often gets underneath and starts lifting.
  • Flashing. Pipe flashings, chimney flashing, wall flashing, and skylights, where many leaks begin.
  • Vents. Roof vents and ridge vents should be secure and working.
  • Valleys. Pine needles and debris collect in valleys and hold water against the roof.
  • Gutters. Clogged or loose gutters can overflow in heavy rain or tear away in high wind.
  • Attic signs. When needed, we check for water stains, damp decking, or poor ventilation.
  • Flat sections. Low slope porch or addition roofs, where water can pond.

Our post on why everyone needs an honest roof assessment explains how an inspection protects your home and your wallet.

Should I repair or replace my roof before storm season?

If your roof is in good shape with a few problem spots, a repair before the season is usually enough. If the roof is old, worn across large areas, or has been patched many times, replacing it before hurricane season can save you from bigger damage later. In our content, we use 15 to 20 years as the average lifespan of an asphalt roof, so age is an important part of the decision.

When a repair makes sense

  • A handful of missing or damaged shingles
  • A worn pipe flashing or a single leak point
  • Loose gutters or a small section of damaged flashing

When a replacement makes more sense

  • Shingles that are brittle, curling, or shedding granules all over the roof
  • Leaks in several places or leaks that come back after repairs
  • Soft spots that suggest the deck underneath is damaged
  • A roof that is at or past the typical lifespan

A worn out roof is more likely to lose shingles in high wind, and once shingles go, rain can get into the deck and the home. We handle both kinds of work. See our roof repair services for smaller fixes, and Jeremy will always tell you honestly which option your roof needs.

Why planning a replacement early pays off

If your roof is near the end of its life, planning the replacement in the off season gives you room to breathe. You have time to look over the written estimate, ask questions, pick your shingle color, and talk it over with your family. You are making a decision on your own terms instead of after a storm, when water is already coming in and everyone is rushing. A new roof installed before the season also starts the summer with fresh underlayment, new flashings, and properly sealed shingles, which is exactly where you want to be when the tropics get active.

How does Honest Roofers build a roof to stand up to storms?

A storm ready roof starts with a full tear-off and the right layers under the shingles. When we replace a pitched roof, we follow the same process every time:

  • Tear off all old material down to the deck. We never roof over old shingles, because a second layer doubles the weight and hides problems.
  • Repair the deck so the new roof is fastened to solid wood.
  • Install drip edge to protect the roof edges and direct water away.
  • Install Ice and Water Shield along the lower edge, covering the first 3 feet.
  • Install synthetic underlayment, never tarred felt.
  • Install new shingles, plus all new pipe flashings and proper roof vents or ridge vent.
  • Address chimney flashing and skylights as needed.

Our preferred shingle is Atlas Pinnacle Pristine with 3M Scotchgard algae protection, which comes with a lifetime guarantee against black algae streaks. That is a real benefit in a humid coastal town. We can install all brands if you prefer another one.

For low slope sections with a pitch of 2/12 or lower, we install EPDM rubber membrane instead of shingles. You can read more on our full roof replacement page and our EPDM flat roof page.

What can I do myself to prepare my roof for hurricane season?

There are a few simple things you can do from the ground to help your roof get through storm season:

  • Clean gutters and downspouts so heavy rain can drain away from the roof edge.
  • Trim tree limbs that hang over the roof or could fall on it in high wind.
  • Pick up loose items in the yard that could become flying debris.
  • Take photos of your roof and the outside of your home now, so you have a record of its condition before any storm.
  • Keep your insurance policy information and a roofer’s phone number somewhere easy to find.
  • Look at your ceilings and attic after heavy rain for new stains.

Please leave climbing on the roof to a professional. Roofs can be steep and slippery, especially in damp coastal air.

What if a storm damages my roof anyway?

Even a well kept roof can be damaged in a strong storm. If that happens, Honest Roofers can provide emergency tarping to protect your home, document the damage, provide reports, and coordinate with your insurance adjuster. Then we handle the repair or replacement. Our post on emergency roofers you can count on explains what to do first.

We do not knock on doors chasing storms. If someone you do not know shows up after a storm pressuring you to sign, take their card and take your time. A trustworthy roofer near me will respect that.
